ABSTRACT: In the town of Point Pleasant, West Virginia in 1966-7, the residents began witnessing what would later become known as Mothman. Characterized by its massive size, wingspan, and glowing red eyes, this creature was said to have terrorized the town until the Silver Creek Bridge disaster occurred. The Mothman sightings were later theorized to be an omen for that terrible tragedy that afflicted the town. For decades, these events and the phenomena have been fascinating people. The legend of Mothman has spurred songs, books, movies, and tourism. Point Pleasant hosts a Mothman festival yearly as a tradition to memorialize the history and the legend.
