Word of Mothman spread like wildfire in the town of Point Pleasant and even many surrounding areas soon after the initial sightings. Since there were many witnesses of the creature, a press conference was called and the legend of Mothman began. One conference attendee, John Keel, went on to write The Mothman Prophecies, which reached a worldwide audience (Daly 2023, 82). The fascination of Mothman can be explained in many ways. Some people feel intrigued to get to the bottom of what happened, some enjoy the mysteriousness of the event, and others may want to try to experience the phenomena themselves. Luckily, Point Pleasant has created a Mothman Museum that caters to all of these points of intrigue. Visitors can see the actual evidence, research, and timeline of events at the museum. If you're unable to visit the museum, here are other ways you can participate in the legend of Mothman to immerse yourself in the folklore and learn more about this cryptid's history.
Storytelling: Spreading the word of Mothman is the primary way the folklore continues. There are many ways this can be done: an actual witness can share their experience, a second hand tale can be pieced together, or inspired media such as movies and songs can be created.
Visiting Point Pleasant: Point Pleasant has a main area that is tied to the Mothman sightings. This area is known as the "TNT area" which was an abandoned nuclear bunker from World War II. This area is where the initial witness sightings occurred. You can visit the site of the Silver Bridge which is now the Silver Memorial Bridge. The town also boasts a Mothman Statue for all your photo ops!
Attending Mothman-related events: Point Pleasant isn't the only place you can meet others that share interest in this folklore. Anyone can host a Mothman related event. Otherwise, comic cons, expos, and other gatherings that are related to similar interests can draw a crowd that appreciate Mothman. It's not uncommon to see Mothman inspired merchandise or art at events like these.
Meeting online: People have created online communities related to Mothman. Posting or chatting there allows individuals to share stories, theories, and media related to Mothman folklore with like-minded enthusiasts from around the world.
Overall, participating in the folklore of Mothman involves being immersed in the stories and history surrounding this legendary cryptid, whether through storytelling, visiting relevant locations, attending events, or communicating online.
